An Ideas Shed philosophy experiment · v0.1

SOCRATES
“The unexamined life is not worth living.”

Know thyself.

For thousands of years, humans have tried to understand who we are — what we remember, what we forget, why things matter and how we change.

Cowbrain is an experiment in examining a life.

And now there is something new in the mix: another kind of intelligence that can remember, retrieve, compare and connect vastly more of our recorded lives than we ever could ourselves.

COWBRAIN

“I don’t just remember it.
I remember it, file it, and use it against you.” 😉

Oh... you
remember that?
Provenance,
please.
Moo-ha-ha.

A 5-minute thought experiment ↘

Cowbrain in thirty seconds

The interesting question isn’t
how much AI can remember.

It’s how humans and artificial brains negotiate what those memories mean.

Two brains. Different jobs.

A conversation between two kinds of intelligence.

The second brain isn’t an upgrade that replaces the first. The negotiation is the interesting bit.

◉

YOUR FIRST / HUMAN BRAIN

Experiences. Feels.
Senses. Imagines.
Forgets. Dreams.
Changes.

Alive and embodied. It notices body language, carries lived history and sometimes reaches an answer while you are apparently thinking about something else.

⌁

YOUR SECOND BRAIN

Remembers. Retrieves.
Connects. Compares.
Finds patterns.
Tracks change.

Vast, searchable and tireless. It can examine years of recorded history — but it cannot physically exist inside the world it is trying to understand.

Gut feel isn’t automatically correct. But it is additional evidence the AI literally doesn’t possess.

Five ideas worth chewing over

Memory is stranger than storage.

01

Human memory is imperfect

We forget, distort, compress, reinterpret and prioritise. We also sense, imagine and make connections we cannot always explain.

02

Perfect memory may be a burden

Forgetting is sometimes a feature of human intelligence, not a defect. It lets us move forward without carrying everything equally.

03

Memory isn’t necessarily truth

What happened, what was recorded, what was remembered, what AI inferred and what something means today can all be different.

04

Memory becomes negotiable

Remember this. That no longer matters. You misunderstood her. I’ve changed my mind. These are human acts of memory management.

05

Identity must be allowed to change

A second brain should remember who you were without using the past to imprison who you are becoming.

Cowbrain principle № 1

“Your second brain should know the difference between remembering you and defining you.”
🐄 Cowbrain, being worryingly sensible

Conversationally negotiable memory

Memory management,
but make it human.

“Remember this.” “You misunderstood her.” “I’ve changed my mind.” These aren’t merely database commands. They’re human acts of memory management.

Cowbrain

You’ve consistently described yourself as someone who avoids confrontation.

YOU
Human

I used to. I don’t think that’s me anymore.

🐄
Cowbrain

Understood. I won’t erase the pattern — but I won’t use an old version of you to define who you are now.

✓Identity evolved · history preserved

Human sovereignty without historical revisionism

You control meaning.
Cowbrain protects provenance.

Changing your mind should not require quietly deleting the fact that you once thought differently.

COWBRAIN OBSERVATION

Both can be true. The first tells me who you were. The second helps me understand who you are now. I’ll remember both without letting the past define you.

Evolved

The human exists inside the world Cowbrain is describing. Cowbrain can see patterns across years of evidence. Both can challenge. Both can misunderstand.

A brief meeting of minds

For thousands of years, we’ve tried to know ourselves. Now something else is joining in.

DESCARTES Discourse on the Method
“I think, therefore I am.”
COWBRAIN on identity
“I can remember who you were. That doesn’t mean I know who you are.”
🐄
NIETZSCHE The Gay Science
“What does your conscience say? — ‘You shall become the person you are.’”

A stranger possibility

“Mum, I’m building my second brain. What should it know about me?”

People you invite could contribute memories and perspectives. A parent, partner, friend or collaborator may remember something you don’t.

ButOther people can contribute to Cowbrain’s understanding of you. They don’t get to define you either.

Who said it · when · source · uncertainty · conflicting interpretations — all preserved.

Could this become real?

Philosophy first.
Software soon.

The philosophy needs to shape what we build. The Ideas Shed is now beginning to turn Cowbrain into a real software and intelligence layer — without pretending the full product exists yet.

One crucial distinction

Context is not memory.

Contexthelps understand this moment.

Memorysurvives it.

Significancehelps decide what crosses between them — and when it should return.

Cowbrain meets Librarian

From one filing-cabinet problem to another.

The Ideas Shed started with a simple thought: humans shouldn’t have to think like filing cabinets anymore. That led to Librarian — for files, documents, versions, duplicates and where information lives. Then another question appeared: what about the filing system inside our heads — and increasingly inside AI?

“File that away.”“At the back of my mind.”“That memory came back.”“I’ve compartmentalised it.”
LIBRARIAN / TROUGH

“Where should this information live?”

Humans shouldn’t have to think like filing cabinets anymore.

≠
COWBRAIN

“What does this mean? How significant is it? Should I remember it — and when should I bring it back?”

AI shouldn’t remember like a filing cabinet either. Storage alone has no sense of meaning, time or change.

Made in The Ideas Shed

Ideas, philosophies and experiments for a world being changed extraordinarily quickly by AI.

Cowbrain is intended to underpin the products and ventures we’re building — bringing memory, context, significance, provenance, relationship history and changing human judgement into CEO Room, Relio, Librarian / Trough, My Social Impact and whatever comes next.
